As more and more comic book based properties are getting produced as tentpole films for the summer, the more those properties consume Summer Preview coverage in a respected entertainment periodical like Entertainment Weekly (EW). Each month this summer, we have a major comic-based movie being released.
In August, we get Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Studios. EW talked to the principles involved with the production of the film. This particular story has James Gunn discussing where the Guardians fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), first noting that the movie is “an origin story of a bunch of characters who have lived life pretty selfishly, and they come upon a cosmic responsibility and have to face up to whether they are heroes or not.”
Of particular note is that Gunn said we might see this band of anti-heroes connect with Avengers eventually, but not until the 3rd installment of that franchise. It is not clear whether he means that the Guardians will have their own follow up, stand-alone franchise before we reach Avengers 3.
However, this story is the first definitive statement that the Guardians are going to be together again in the MCU. Until now, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has always called this movie a “one-off ” and has skirted direct confirmation of a sequel.
The film is due in the U.S. August 1. Zoe Saldana plays Gamora, Dave Bautista portrays Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper lends his voice to Rocket Raccoon, and Vin Diesel voices Groot. Lee Pace stars as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, and Benicio Del Toro reprises his role as The Collector.
Do you think a sequel will be an automatic green-light if the movie is only modestly successful?
