It’s been over a year since Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures officially announced that they’d be teaming-up to work on the future of Spider-Man films. We’ve known for a while now that the new movie would be coming in summer of 2017, but now we know that the first standalone Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be officially called Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The name of the movie was revealed by Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman along with the new Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, on stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

The Homecoming title was rumored thanks to a domain name that was registered earlier this month, but was officially confirmed for the first time at the panel. Rothman explained that the name had a double meaning for Spidey since it will be “both a high school reference, and a homecoming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” It basically reflects on the younger take on Spidey that they’re going for this time around by keeping him both in High School and letting him take on the problems of a teenager, as well as those of a superhero in a much larger universe.

Marvel Studios will only be co-producing Homecoming with Sony which was reinforced recently by president Kevin Feige in detail by saying that it’s a Sony Picture, with Marvel creative assistance.

No set villain or villains have been officially confirmed for the movie yet. We do at least know that the filmmakers are planing on using a villain that hasn’t appeared in any of the previous five Spider-Man movies before so characters like the Green Goblin’s, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Venom, Lizard, Electro, and Rhino will most likely not appear in the new film series right away. Past rumors suggested that characters like Scorpion or Kraven could be used as potential villains for new movie although recent rumors suggest that the filmmakers might be planning to use the Vulture as their primary villain and are looking at Michael Keaton to play the character.

Spider-Man: Homecoming directed by Jon Watts and starring Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Zendaya as an unspecified role, will hit theaters on July 7, 2017. Holland’s Spider-Man will be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
