Marvel Studios has long expressed interest in a TV show based on the early years of S.H.I.E.L.D. and agent Peggy Carter.
Peggy Carter is the former paramour of Captain Steve Rogers. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Carter is not only a love interest, but also a mentor, instructor, and confidant. The movie ends with Steve asking Peggy to promise to save a dance for him, while Cap is plummeting to his supposed death.
After First Avenger, Marvel executives continued to talk about Peggy Carter (as portrayed by The lovely Hayley Atwell) coming back to the MCU because of popularity with fans. So when the opportunity came for Marvel to develop a one-shot, they used Atwell’s Carter in the action short.
Atwell reprised her role as Carter in the Marvel One Shot film Agent Carter, which was released with the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray disc, and follows the events one year after Captain America: The First Avenger.
70 years later, In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (SPOILERS) Peggy is sick and on her death bed. The saddest part of the movie is that she is apparently suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and forgets that Steve is already come back from the dead.
In January 2014, the Hollywood Reporter reported that Marvel had a stealth Agent Carter project from TV up-fronts. THR reported a script was finished some time in the fall of 2013 (“the script is great,” ABC’s Paul Lee said back in January). Hayley Atwell’s contract option came up and was extended, but the green light never came. Now there is talk that a pickup for Agent Carter may come along with a renewal for Marvel’s freshman Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with the new series possibly serving as a bridge between the fall and spring portions of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The actress said she was willing to star in a TV spin-off centered on Peggy, which has been given the green light by ABC, who confirmed that Reaper creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas will be showrunners, and that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely will write the show’s pilot.
From agentcarter.net: “She says there’s a script and writers on board and there is great support from Marvel and Disney for the series to be made but right now there’s no information about the series because it still doesn’t have the green light. She also says it’s more a matter of ‘time’ than a matter ‘if’ and that ‘it’s looking good.’ She discusses what it’s like working on the Captain America films and how she feels about playing a strong female character.”
Agent Carter is one of many TV projects in development for Marvel Studios. Chief among those projects is the Defenders Netflix series, which will be the culmination of separate Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist miniseries. The Defenders project is set to start production in New York City in this year and set for release on Netflix in 2015. No casting has been announced for any of these series.
Last fall, Marvel/ABC premiered Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which centers around a rogue team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by the resurrected Phil Coulson. After initial success in drawing a big crowd, but the show has faltered in finding a larger audience than an average of 1.8-2.0 share per week in the ratings.
At present, we don’t have any information about an official announcement for the project, nor has any casting been done. We will continue to watch for news on Agent Carter.
